If you are being treated for some disease or have any problems you are trying to solve, you have most likely been asked to see a psychiatrist at least once. Here come several thoughts that do not help you in choosing to go there or not. In fact, if the figure of the psychologist, especially in recent years, has been improving and we no longer see ourselves branded as ill just because we go to the sessions, the psychiatrist still maintains his aura so that anyone who goes there feels automatically ill, because it’s thought to deal solely with serious mental illnesses. Hence the doubts about going there or not. We compare ourselves to people with serious mental illnesses and we are told that in the end, we’re not ill like them so it’s useless or we think it may be useful but we fear what society could say and think.
In addition, there is another major obstacle to overcome, whether or not to take medicines. This is because it’s seen as the moment of no longer returning, once you begin to take them it means that you are ill and can no longer hide your condition. There are also those who fear medicines can become an addiction and they will no longer be able to stop taking them. In practice there is one thing for everyone. Who says it’s useful, who that it’s not, who that they have to solve their own problems without external help, who that is a waste of money and time. There is, when we talk about psychology and psychiatry, everything and the opposite of everything. Consequently, it’s impossible to find a real answer to the question of whether it’s useful to go to the psychiatrist. This is because it changes from person to person. I will only tell you a few things about which I have reflected.
If you stop yourself from going to the psychiatrist for the fear of the judgment of others, think about the fact that you are placing the tranquillity of others over your health, something that should never be done. For once in your life, it’s right to be selfish and think about yourself, if others don’t like it it doesn’t matter. If instead, you think it’s a waste of time because you don’t feel seriously ill, what I tell you is that no one ever feels seriously ill, we always think that there are people more serious than us and therefore they deserve care that we don’t deserve. Let’s stop thinking constantly about others and think also about ourselves and our health from time to time. Let’s move on to those who think medicines can become an addiction. Don’t worry, your psychiatrist is there for that too, to make sure that the medicines are effective but they don’t create addictions, if you follow his suggestions on dosages and frequency you’ll see that the percentage of risk is very low, you have to trust both him and you. And then there are them, those who see it as a waste of money and time. I personally don’t understand this point because I cannot understand how to worry about one’s health can be seen as a waste. There are so many things we do during the day that can actually be seen as waste but taking care of our health is not one of them.
Personally, since my psychologist advised me to go to a psychiatrist too, I didn’t think twice about it, I trusted my psychologist and his judgment and then I trusted the psychiatrist when he offered me to take some medicines for the problems I had and I still have but I’m keeping an eye on. My therapists are of great help to me, and if I am where I am now it’s a lot thanks to them too.
